The "Hexenturm", or Witches' Tower (originally known as "Hessenturm"), just off of Ritter von Marx Bridge, is one of the city's key landmarks. It was part of the city fortifications from the 14th century onwards. Contrary to popular belief, "witches" were never kept here; that actually took place in the town hall tower. The tower preserved today is a reconstruction built at the beginning of the 19th century along with the construction of Ritter von Marx Bridge. The bridge, built from 1903-05, spans the old town. The tower and the "bridgekeeper's house" served as the architectonic conclusion of the castle square and thus formed an entrance to Bad Homburg's town centre.
