The 12-metre-tall Landgraves’ Monument was created in 1906 by order of Kaiser Wilhelm II as a tribute to the Landgravial House of Hessen-Homburg. The emperor chose its location at the Elizabeth Fountain in the spa gardens because it had been the landgraves that recognised the importance of Homburg's mineral sources and subsequently initiated the development of Homburg as a spa resort. Kaiser Wilhelm II financed not only the monument, he also determined its appearance and location. The front depicts Landgrave Frederick II (1633-1708), the first truly important landgrave. On the back, one finds an image of Landgrave Ferdinand, the last landgrave, with whose death in 1866 the dynasty ended in the male line. The bronze arrangement of standard, oak leaves and crested shield on the steps of the monument refers to the military careers of the landgraves, almost all of whom were in the service of other powers.
