Built in 1718, St. Jacob's Church was consecrated as a French-Reformed church in 1724 and used by the local Catholic community until the completion of St. Mary's Church in 1895. After ten years of vacancy, the Homburg Turngemeinde (aka HTG or Homburg Gymnastics Club) acquired the building and had it converted into a gymnasium by Louis Jacobi in 1905. The building was used as such for more than 100 years. In October 2012, the Scheffel Gallery purchased the monument-listed sacred structure together with its extension and the adjacent garden with the purpose of using it as an exhibition venue. After several years of structural restoration and extensive conversion and renovation work on the entire building complex, the new cultural space was opened in 2016 and is now named "Jakobshallen", or "Jacob's Halls".
