The so-called "Brunnenmädchen", or Maidens of the Fountains, existed from 1837 to 1939. Their task was to serve the freshly tapped mineral water to spa guests. Pending on the medical prescription, these waters were served cold, lukewarm or hot. These maidens were also required to keep the charcoal fires going with which the mineral water was heated up, and also to collect used glasses. What's more, they were also charged with making sure that locals did not bottle more mineral water for themselves than was allowed. The graceful and delicate appearance of these carefree maidens was captured in sculpture by the artist, Richard Hess (1937-2017). The sculpture, Maiden of the Fountains, was created in 1994, financed by a fundraising campaign jointly initiated by the Michael Blaszczyk Gallery and the former local newspaper, Taunus-Kurier.
