Landgravine Elizabeth, lovingly known as "Eliza", was the most popular landgravine of the House of Hessen-Homburg. The daughter of the English monarch, King George III, married Prince Frederick Joseph in 1818 at the tender age of 48 and with him enjoyed a happy marriage. "Eliza" spent much of her dowry and appanage on her new home in Homburg. Among other things, she had the palace and the landgravial gardens beautified. She was also the inspiration behind the Gothic House. When she died in 1840, all of Homburg mourned her passing with great sorrow. The monument was dedicated in her honour on 11 August 1908 by Kaiser Wilhelm II and in the presence of King Edward VII. The marble portrait standing on a pedestal was created by the sculptor, Fritz Gerth (1845-1928). It is located in front of the English Church on Ferdinandstraße. which was originally built for English spa guests.
