The Elizabeth Source played a major role in the rise of Homburg and its establishment as a world-renowned spa resort. Landgravine Elizabeth of Hessen-Homburg (1770-1840), daughter of King George III of England and wife of Landgrave Frederick VI, was a great patron of the city. The discovery of the spring in 1834 is generally accepted as the birth of the spa town of Bad Homburg. Its waters were soon hailed as the healthiest in Germany. In 1836, no less than the internationally renowned chemist, Justus von Liebieg, marvelled that "it would be difficult to find a mineral water anywhere in Germany with the same richness of effective components as that of Homburg." The waters of the Elizabeth Source continue to be taken to this day to alleviate stomach and intestinal disorders.
