To commemorate 40 years of existence of the Federation of Expellees (BdV) in Bad Homburg, the City unveilled a memorial column in Bad Homburg's spa gardens on 15 April 1989. Created by the sculptor, Ernst Steinacker, the 2.7-metre-tall bronze pillar serves as a column of remembrance and reconciliation. It calls to memory the tormentful years following World War II, when tens of thousands of ethnic Germans fled from their homes in parts of Central and Eastern Europe, or were forcibly expelled following. Arriving from their former homes, they were soon integrated into their new home, the Federal Republic of Germany, including Bad Homburg.
