Prevention of violence - NO to violence against women and girls

On average, one in three women worldwide is the victim of violence, rape or assault. In Germany too - that's 12 million women!

In 2022, the number of victims nationwide was 240,547, an increase of 8.5 percent compared to 2021. (Source: BKA)

Almost every two minutes, someone in Germany is a victim of domestic violence. Every hour, more than 14 women are victims of intimate partner violence. Almost every day, a partner or ex-partner attempts to kill a woman. Every third day, a man kills his (ex-)partner!

The figures show the sad reality: violence against women is an everyday problem for society as a whole. It is used to maintain power over women.

Ways out of domestic violence

Everyone has the right to a life free of violence, even in their own home. Domestic violence is not a private matter, but a violation of people's right to physical integrity.

Take the right to live without fear, threats and violence.

The Violence Protection Act has been in force since 01.01.2002. This law strengthens the rights and protection options of victims of domestic violence and holds perpetrators accountable.

If you are threatened by violence, make use of your rights and apply for measures to protect you at the local court / family court. You can be represented by a lawyer and the court has the option of having the perpetrator of the violence removed from the shared home. This is also possible if he or she is the tenant/owner.

In the event of acute danger, always call the police on 110. The police have the task of protecting you and can order the perpetrator of the violence out of the apartment. The police are obliged to file a criminal complaint and send it to the public prosecutor's office.

If you have been physically injured, go to a doctor and obtain a medical certificate

If youdo not feel safe in your home and need intensive support, contact a women's shelter.
