Arbitration offices

In the event of differences of opinion and disputes, arbitration offices can help to settle the dispute as an independent body.

Tasks

The arbitration offices, which work according to the principle of "arbitration instead of judgment", are essentially responsible for the following matters:

  • property disputes concerning claims up to € 750
  • disputes under neighboring law
  • Violation of personal honor

The arbitrators are obliged to maintain confidentiality and initially talk to the parties involved in a calm atmosphere. An attempt is then made to reach an agreement without a court ruling. The Hessian Ministry of Justice provides extensive information on the tasks and responsibilities of the arbitration offices. You can also find detailed information on the responsibilities, procedures and practice of the arbitration offices at the Association of German Arbitrators. In many cases, an attempt at mediation by the arbitration office is mandatory, i.e. an arbitration office must first be consulted before a civil court can be called upon. This is intended to reduce the workload of the civil courts and settle disputes as amicably as possible.
