Mission statement

Long-term landscape planning perspectives for the development of the landscape in Bad Homburg.

Model for the development of the landscape in Bad Homburg

The map "Perspectives for landscape and open space development in Bad Homburg v.d.Höhe" schematically depicts the long-term landscape planning perspectives Bad Homburg should strive for and thus formulates a model for the development of the landscape in Bad Homburg.

The areas that are already of particularly high value and whose preservation is to be ensured in the long term are presented. These spaces include the Kirdorfer Feld landscape and nature reserve, the Landgraviate garden landscape, the Limes and Saalburg UNESCO World Heritage Site and some high-quality woodland areas. In addition to the historic parks, the special qualities of the open spaces in the old town, the village centers of Ober-Erlenbach, Ober-Eschbach and Kirdorf as well as the listed villas in the historic spa district on the Kaiser-Friedrich-Promenade are considered to be of particularly high quality.

The "green corridors" along the streams were also identified as being of outstanding importance for the city. They fulfill several important functions in Bad Homburg, both for recreation and the protection of biotopes and species, as well as a conduit for cold air and regional winds. The long-term goal is therefore to develop continuous biotope and recreational networks along these green corridors, e.g. by keeping them free of further development, creating ecologically diverse vegetation structures or specifically designing and optimizing the cycle and footpath networks.

In the outskirts, the small-structured landscape areas with orchards, leisure gardens and meadows typical of Bad Homburg should be preserved and further developed, including Platzenberg, Pilgerrain and Wingert.

The arable landscapes on the fertile soils around Ober-Eschbach and Ober-Erlenbach are to be preserved and enhanced as habitats for flora and fauna through structural elements, e.g. along the regional park route.

In addition to the general promotion of biodiversity and species protection, the habitats of animal species of particular importance to Bad Homburg are to be promoted. These can be found in the Erlenbach FFH area (fish species bullhead) and in the north-west of the urban area, where notable populations of the specially protected butterfly species pale and dark meadow blue were recorded in 2015 and 2017.
