In a central information system, the Contaminated Sites File, the Hessian state administration records, among other things, data on former industrial sites (contaminated sites) and disused landfills (old landfills) as well as other localized soil contamination (so-called harmful soil changes).
Areas where there are concrete indications of contamination are marked as suspected or suspected contaminated sites. If the damage is so serious that remediation is required, the area is listed as a contaminated site or harmful soil change.
When purchasing a property, changing its use or building on it, it is advisable to obtain information about suspected or known contamination from the contaminated sites database in good time.
The data in the contaminated sites file is environmental information within the meaning of the Hessian Environmental Information Act, meaning that there is a fundamental right to access and information. Access to the environmental information is limited by the exclusions set out in Sections 7 and 8 of the Hessian Environmental Information Act.
