Simply explained: How a wastewater treatment plant works
A lot of water is cleaned every year at the Bad Homburg wastewater treatment plant. We turn on the tap or flush the toilet. We do this every day. But what happens afterwards?
- The wastewater first flows into the treatment plant. It goes through a sieve. The sieve removes large waste such as food scraps. Then comes the sand and grease trap. Small residues such as peas, corn, sand and grease are removed here.
- Then comes the pre-treatment. The water flows through a basin. Organic particles settle out. These particles are placed in large containers. The mechanical cleaning is then complete. The water is now free of the largest pieces of dirt.
- Now comes the biological purification. Small organisms absorb parts of the wastewater. They purify the water naturally. A lot of oxygen is added. Ammonium is converted into nitrogen.
- The third stage is chemical purification. Residues that the organisms were unable to absorb are removed with an agent. The water then flows through the underground secondary clarifier. Finally, it is discharged clean into the Eschbach.
