“Hope is like a flame. One moment it is strong, the next it is almost extinguished. But a spark always remains.”
It is poetic and hopeful memories like these that eleven-year-old Vera leaves us in her diary. She is one of 669 Jewish children and teenagers up to the age of 17 whom Sir Nicholas Winton saved from being murdered by the Nazis. It is a happy childhood in a small village near Prague. Here, Vera grows up sheltered and surrounded by rural idyll. And she suspects nothing of the atrocities of the Nazis that are beginning to engulf Europe. But eventually, escape becomes the only chance of survival for the Jewish population. At that moment, a young Englishman decides to act—and Vera's parents make a fateful decision… Here begins little Vera's journey: With nothing but a small suitcase in her hand, she sets off into the unknown. For three days, she travels by train across Central Europe until she finally reaches the British capital, London. Alone in a foreign country, she now has to build a new life for herself.
Freely adapted from Vera Gissing's memoir "Pearls of Childhood," the La Senty Menti Theatre has further developed episodes from the diary for the stage and interwoven them with biographical reflections by the actress, Liora Hilb. The play vividly and sensitively portrays the fears and desires of a child, the search for identity, and how the will of an individual makes all the difference.
