The war memorial at Waisenhausplatz is dedicated to the five Homburg men who fell in action during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The column, which stands on a multi-step pedestal, shows an eagle with outstretched wings and a sceptre at its feet. It was created by the master builder, Christian Holler, and the sculptor, Jacob May. The date of inauguration depicted on the reverse side, 10 May 1873, is incorrect for reasons unknown. The actual inauguration ceremony took place on 10 May 1875.
