Tucked away in the most secluded corner of the 44-hectare spa gardens, this natural spring bears a special significance for the spa town of Bad Homburg. The source was in fact the very first to be discovered here. Named after Landgrave Frederick V Ludwig, the fountain is also the oldest in the city's spa gardens. The spa resort owes its two hundred-year history as a sophisticated spa resort to the spring water of the Ludwig Fountain. In 1810, the source was the first to be tapped and the water from this drinking fountain is said to have been shipped in jugs for advertising purposes. The acidulous water features few minerals but a great deal of carbonic acid. It is quite tasty and used to help cure diseases of the upper airways.
