The Lantern Festival is Bad Homburg's "festival of festivals" and at the same time one of the state's largest regional folk fairs. Looking back on 80 years of history and tradition (first held in 1935), the festival attracts thousands of guests every August. To honour their festival, the City erected an octagonal fountain on its main marketplace in 1979, depicting on its pedestal five children holding lanterns. The fountain was created by the Bad Homburg artist, Harri R. Freder, who died in 2004. A bronze plaque on the fountain features the text of Paul Grützner's official Lantern Festival song.
