One of the more interesting attractions of the Great Pine Forest is the accidentally rediscovered horse grave. It is said that Landgrave Frederick V Ludwig (1748-1820) loved his faithful steed, Madjar, above all else. After its death, he had him buried near the Gothic House. On a memorial plaque, the grieving landgrave immortalised his sentiments for his long-time companion: "Here lies buried the most beautiful horse, which unites all virtues; if one could have friendship with animals, then here would lie my friend".
