Bad Homburg's time-honoured casino has always been a special attraction for guests from Russia. It was the same with the renowned author, Fyodor M. Dostoyevsky, who visited Homburg three times between 1863 and 1870. On each occasion, he ended up gambling away his entire cash fortune. He transcribed his experiences in his world-famous novel, "The Gambler". In honour of the great man of letters, this sculpture was ceremoniously unveiled on 11 July 2014, a date that simultaneously marked the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Bad Homburg's twinning with Peterhof in Russia. The sculpture was created by Nikolai Karlychanov from St. Petersburg. Due to the tense situation at the time, the work did not arrive in Bad Homburg by land or air as usual, but by sea via Finland.
