The Bad Homburg Municipal Historical Museum has two locations: the "Gothic House" (which has been closed for renovation since 2021 until further notice) and the former "Horex Museum", which showcased Bad Homburg's industrial history, in particular the development of the Horex motorcycle brand, between 2012 and 2019. Large parts of the museum collection have now moved into the "Horex Museum" building and can be viewed there on request as a "show depot".

Around 40,000 objects are now temporarily stored in this "show depot in the Horex Museum" while the Gothic House Museum is being renovated. The "Horex Museum" not only houses parts of the industrial history collection, but also the art and cultural history collection of the Municipal Historical Museum. Concentrated over an area of 380 m², the main areas on display are paintings, sculpture, toys, glass, porcelain, pewter, musical instruments and furniture.

Petersburg hanging

The many portrait paintings in the "Petersburg hanging", from which hundreds of eyes look out at the visitors, are an experience. The paintings by the famous painters Friedrich Christian Reinermann (1764-1835) and Johann Friedrich Voigt (1792-1871) and the collection of Hölderlin portraits form special groups. The huge cast of the famous Schlüter bust depicting the Landgrave of Homburg, Friedrich II, can be seen here at eye level for the first time.

The domestic culture of bygone times is revealed in precious furniture and richly decorated glassware. From the field of industrial history, the many enamel signs, an early driving machine by Pierre Michaux, but also the two legendary Bad Homburg motorcycle models "S35" and the "Horex Regina", which made Bad Homburg famous worldwide as an industrial location in the 1950s, are on display.

The graphic art, numismatics, jewelry & hatpins, hats & fashion sections of the collection can only be seen in guided tours, when special pieces are taken out of cabinets and vaults and explained by the scientists. These tours provide insights that would not be possible even in regular museum exhibitions. Thematically, these tours are geared towards the interests of children, young people and adults.

As the collection of the Municipal Historical Museum is much larger, objects from the other (secret) repositories will be retrieved from time to time, meaning that the Schaudepot will continue to offer exciting insights into Bad Homburg's history even after several visits.

Parallel to the exhibits on display in the Horex Museum's show depot, small special presentations on current topics will be exhibited.

The Horex Museum is currently only open for guided tours. These can be booked for groups of two people or more - by telephone on (06172) 1013167 or 100-4133 or by email to museum@bad-homburg.de.

Gothic House" app

In addition to the Schaudepot, the "Gothic House" app invites you to take a virtual tour through a selection of the collection.

Horex moves out, the municipal museum moves in

For seven successful years, the Horex Museum told stories about the origins and special features of Horex motorcycles. The small but fine museum was opened in 2012 and has since hosted eight exhibitions entitled "Model Change" featuring the legendary motorcycles manufactured in Bad Homburg, three special exhibitions on the theme of "Inspiration Technology" and five presentations in the "Focus on ..." series.

Almost 25,500 visitors came to see the evidence of Bad Homburg's industrial and technical history, which curator Dr. Ursula Grzechca-Mohr was supported in putting together by Axel Butterweck from MSC Bad Homburg and Frank Vollmer from the Horex Club Taunus. Countless lenders also contributed to the success.
