City supports BecherBonus

According to estimates, a total of around 2.8 billion disposable cups are currently consumed in Germany every year, which equates to 320,000 cups per hour. These disposable cups alone generate around 40,000 tons of waste every year in Germany.

Time to do something about this flood of waste! Hessian Environment Minister Priska Hinz has therefore launched an initiative to encourage consumers to have their hot drink to go filled into a container they have brought with them instead of a disposable cup.

Consumers are rewarded with a discount of at least 10 cents per cup.

Businesses that take part receive free advertising in return: the Ministry of the Environment publishes participation in the initiative on its website and on its Twitter channel @UmweltHessen. Business owners can also advertise with a back-glass sticker and free postcards.

So it pays for everyone to take part!

The city therefore supports the initiative and asks all retailers and restaurateurs who offer hot drinks in disposable cups to take part in BecherBonus. Consumers can also contribute by actively approaching businesses to see if they would like to offer the BecherBonus - and by bringing their own reusable cup into the store.
