Since the 1980s, guilt has started to become a key emotion in the moral-emotional lexicon of the liberal left. This lecture attempts to retrace the cultural and historical processes by which this was made possible. It also inquires about the normative and political implications of such transformation, asking, for example, if guilt is equivalent to accountability or atonement and if it meets with the strategic aims of liberalism or, on the contrary, defeats them.

Über die Rednerin
Eva Illouz ist Professorin für Soziologie an der Hebräischen Universität von Jerusalem sowie Studiendirektorin an der École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris. Sie hat zahlreiche Bücher zur Soziologie der Emotionen, zum Konsumkapitalismus und zur Kultur der Moderne publiziert. Für ihr Werk wurde sie u.a. mit dem Frank-Schirrmacher-Preis 2024, dem Aby Warburg Preis 2024 und dem EMET-Preis für Sozialwissenschaften ausgezeichnet. Letzte Buchpublikationen: Undemokratische Emotionen. Das Beispiel Israel (Suhrkamp, 2023), Explosive Moderne (Suhrkamp, 2024) und Der 8. Oktober. Über die Ursprünge des neuen Antisemitismus (Suhrkamp, 2025).

Veranstalter
Der Vortrag wird vom Forschungsschwerpunkt "Democratic Vistas" des Forschungskollegs Humanwissenschaften der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt und dem Graduiertenkolleg "Ästhetik der Demokratie" veranstaltet.
