Platzenberg

The town of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe wants to further develop the nature and landscape on the Platzenberg for everyone.

General information

The areas in the southwest of the spa town are large. The areas should not be built on. The areas should remain for recreation. In January 2012, the town council adopted a plan. The plan is for the Platzenberg.

The areas on the Platzenberg are diverse. There are meadows. There are orchards. There are hedges. There are copses. There are fields. There are leisure gardens. There are former mills. The diversity is good for nature conservation. Many protected little owls live there. Many people come there at the weekend.

There have been bad developments in recent years. The fruit trees became older. Many orchards collapsed. There was less habitat for the little owl. The users no longer looked after the plots. The plots lay fallow. Many footpaths lead through the area. The area is fragile. The city of Bad Homburg wants to do something about it. The city is working together with the owners and users. The city has the "Platzenberg nature experience" concept.

The "Platzenberg nature experience" action plan

The objectives of the "Platzenberg Nature Experience" action plan are

  • The Platzenberg should not be built on for a long time.
  • Nature and the landscape should develop well for a long time.
  • The recreational areas should remain protected for a long time.

Citizens and the city administration worked together in 2012. They implemented many measures from the action plan. They planted new orchards. They looked after old meadows. The city planted fruit trees on its own land. It has supported the Platzenberg Landscape Conservation Association and private individuals with money. A large meadow on Leopoldsweg was cleared of a lot of undergrowth and garbage. 26 new fruit trees were planted. In June 2012, two seating areas with benches and tables were installed on a municipal plot of land. The plot is designated as a rest area in the action plan. With the benches, you can now take a break with a beautiful view of Bad Homburg. new paths were built in 2013 and 2014.

The city will continue to support the users of the garden plots and orchards. It will collect the prunings free of charge. It will organize pruning courses. It will give money for new fruit trees and their care.

Promotion of orchards

Since 1992, the city of Bad Homburg has had a scheme for the promotion of orchards. You can apply for money from the city council. The Department of Urban Planning - Environmental and Landscape Planning is responsible for this. You can get money for new trees, replacement trees and the repair of orchard meadows.

People and dogs

The Platzenberg is very popular with people with dogs. They love going for walks there. This is great fun for people and dogs. But there are also often problems. These are caused by a lack of knowledge and carelessness.

  • Dog excrement on meadows and fields brings bacteria and germs into animal feed and food. Dog excrement transmits many diseases to grazing animals.
  • Some dog owners throw the full poop bags into nature. The plastic bag does not decompose. Someone has to clean it up. Wild animals nibble on the bags and get sick.
  • The meadows are less attractive for people who want to relax.
  • It smells unpleasant on warm summer days.
  • Free-roaming dogs disturb people and animals.
  • Wild animals get scared and flee quickly. Young animals are left helpless.

The Platzenberg landscape area is about more than dirty shoes. It is about food for animals and people. It is about important places for recreation.

There are several dog stations on the Platzenberg. Here you can pick up poop bags and throw away the full bags.

Development plan no. 93 "Am Platzenberg"

Development plan no. 93 "Am Platzenberg" has been in place since 1998. It has a landscape plan. The plan is valid. The plan has similar objectives to the action plan. These goals have hardly been implemented to date. This is now set to change. The "Platzenberg nature experience" action plan is intended to help.

The development plan states which plots may be used as leisure gardens. Garden huts and fences must meet certain requirements.

The data on the development plan is for information purposes only. No rights can be derived from it.
