Terracina

One hundred kilometers south of Rome lies Terracina, which is mentioned as a colony of Roman citizens as early as 329 BC. Crossroads of the Via Appia, port facilities and a place of recreation for Roman citizens: the Temple of Jupiter Anxur, a huge temple complex high above the city, still bears witness to this past today.

Historical past and modern sandy beach

Numerous monuments are a reminder of Terracina's rich historical past: the 12th century cathedral and the 13th century Venditti Palace as well as the residence of Pope Pius, Palazzo Braschi, which was inaugurated in 1795. Other sights include the Forum Severiano and the Marina and Neptuniae thermal baths. And, of course, the Jupiter-Anxur temple from the 1st century BC on the 227-metre-high Monte Sant' Angelo. You can swim on the ten-kilometre-long sandy beach from April to October, and the sun shines around 530 hours longer in Terracina than in Venice every year. This is why the sun-kissed, famous Terracina Muscat grows on the slopes of the Monti Ausoni. Numerous hotels and guesthouses as well as a large campsite offer accommodation in every price range. The excellent Italian cuisine and the Mediterranean warmth of the locals guarantee a relaxing stay.
