Local councils

At its meeting on September 17, 2015, the Bad Homburg city council decided to establish four new local districts. In addition to the existing local districts of Dornholzhausen, Ober-Eschbach and Ober-Erlenbach, the local districts of Berliner Siedlung/Gartenfeld, Gonzenheim, Innenstadt and Kirdorf were formed for the city area. A local advisory council is set up for each local district. The local advisory councils consist of nine members for each of the local districts.

  • In an established community, the citizens of a local district have the opportunity to contribute suggestions, ideas and proposals via the local advisory council. The local advisory council takes on the tasks of citizenship. It safeguards local interests and describes the situation on the ground.

  • The local advisory council has the right to make proposals in all matters concerning the local district. It must be consulted on all important matters affecting the local district, in particular on the draft budget. It comments on issues submitted to it by the municipal council or the magistrate.

  • The chairperson elected by the local advisory council bears the title of local chairperson. The role is comparable to that of the head of the municipal council: he or she convenes meetings, chairs them and signs the minutes.

  • The election of local councillors takes place every five years in parallel with the municipal elections. The invitation to the constituent meeting is issued by the previous local council chairperson. If a local advisory council has been set up for the first time, the Lord Mayor issues an invitation.

  • The meetings of the local advisory councils are open to the public. In very few individual cases, e.g. for property transactions, the public may be excluded. This is indicated in the invitation.

  • Among other things, the local council deals with traffic matters, construction projects, renovation measures, street naming, design and maintenance in the district and cultural matters.

  • Before the start of each meeting of the local advisory council, there is a general question and answer session for citizens. This gives individuals the opportunity to present their concerns.

  • As a rule, the local advisory councils meet once a month. Vacations are an exception to this rule. The invitations to the meetings are published in the local daily newspapers, on the municipal website and on the notice board in the town hall in front of the town store.
