The municipal council is the administrative authority of the city and is responsible for day-to-day business. It consists of three full-time and eleven honorary members. The Chairman of the Magistrate is Lord Mayor Alexander W. Hetjes. The full-time magistrate members are elected for 6 years, the honorary members for the current term of office (5 years).
Tasks of the Magistrate
The magistrate has the following tasks, among others:
- Implementation of laws and ordinances
- Preparing and implementing the resolutions of the municipal council
- Carrying out the tasks incumbent upon and assigned to it by law
- The administration of the city's public facilities and commercial enterprises
- The assessment, levying and collection of municipal taxes and the collection of other revenues
- The preparation of the budget and the investment program
- External representation of the city
- Informing the citizens
Through the honorary members of the municipal council, the majority of votes in the municipal council are transferred to the municipal council.
The entire municipal council takes part in the meetings of the municipal council. The full-time members of the municipal council always have the right to speak in this body, but do not take part in the vote. Magistrate members can also never be city councillors at the same time (incompatibility of office and mandate).
