Monument protection is intended to preserve the old building fabric and the old appearance of cultural monuments. Buildings are cultural monuments if it is important to preserve them
- for scientific reasons or
- for artistic reasons
Do you want to make changes to a cultural monument? You always need permission from the lower monument protection authority. This also applies if you do not need planning permission. If you need planning permission, the building authority will contact the monument protection authority.
You may only start building once you have permission.
Tip: Don't know whether your building is a cultural monument? Have a look in the monument register or ask the monument protection authority.
Documents
You must submit various documents. This depends on the individual case. For example
- Site plan of the property
- Plans of the property (floor plans, views, sections)
- precise description of the measures with material specifications and technical details or
- Investigations and expert opinions from specialists (e.g. from the fields of restoration, carpentry, statics, geology)
- Form for the statistics on building construction (building permit - building overhang - building completion or demolition - change of use) in duplicate
Tip: Ask the lower monument protection authority at an early stage. They will tell you which documents you need.
Fees
If you need a building permit, there are fees. Ask the relevant authority directly.
