Platzenberg

The town of Bad Homburg v. d. Höhe wants to further develop nature and landscape on the Platzenberg for general use.

General information

The total of around 50 hectares in the south-west of the spa town are to be protected from development and secured as recreational areas in the long term. With this in mind, an action plan for the Platzenberg was adopted by the city council in January 2012.

The areas on the Platzenberg have an astonishing variety of uses. Meadows, orchards, hedges, copses and fields mingle with leisure gardens and former mills. This diversity makes the area valuable for nature conservation. The area is home to a dense population of protected little owls and is a popular destination for excursions at weekends.

However, increasingly unfavorable developments have been observed in recent years: The natural ageing process of fruit trees has led to the gradual collapse of many orchards. The structural richness and habitat for the little owl were increasingly lost. Land was no longer maintained by users and fell into disuse. A large number of footpaths lead through the sensitive area. On the basis of the "Platzenberg Nature Experience" action plan, the town of Bad Homburg wants to work with owners and users to counteract these problems.

The "Platzenberg Nature Experience" action plan

The objectives of the "Platzenberg Nature Experience" action plan are

  • the long-term protection of the Platzenberg from development.
  • the protection and long-term development of nature and landscape.
  • the long-term protection of recreational areas.

Thanks to the joint commitment of citizens and the city administration, a number of measures from the action plan were implemented in 2012. New orchards were planted and old meadows were restored. The city planted fruit trees on its own land and provided financial support to the Platzenberg Landscape Conservation Association and private individuals. A large meadow on Leopoldsweg was cleared of dense undergrowth and garbage and 26 new fruit trees were planted. In June 2012, two seating areas with benches and tables were installed on a municipal plot of land. The site is designated as a rest area in the action plan. Now that the benches have been installed, people can take a break here with a wonderful view of Bad Homburg. new path connections were built in 2013 and 2014.

The city will continue to support users of the garden plots and orchards by collecting prunings free of charge, organizing pruning courses and providing financial support for the planting and maintenance of fruit trees in the orchards.

Promotion of orchards

Since 1992, the city of Bad Homburg has had an orchard promotion guideline. Applications for financial support for new planting, replanting and the restoration of orchard meadows can be submitted to the city administration, Department of Urban Planning - Environmental and Landscape Planning.

People and dogs

The Platzenberg is also very popular with dog owners who enjoy walking their dogs there. As much fun as this is for dogs and humans, unfortunately many conflicts can arise due to a lack of knowledge and carelessness.

  • Dog excrement on meadows and fields carries bacteria and germs into animal feed and food. Dog excrement transmits numerous diseases to grazing animals.
  • Some dog owners dispose of the filled poop bags in the countryside. The plastic bag does not decompose and must be disposed of. Wild animals nibble on the plastic bags and become ill.
  • The meadows become less attractive for people seeking recreation.
  • On warm summer days, odors are a nuisance.
  • Dogs running loose can be a nuisance to people and animals.
  • Wild animals are frightened and flee hastily, young animals are left helpless.

In a landscape area such as the Platzenberg, it is about more than dirty shoes: it is about food for animals and people and about safeguarding important areas for local recreation.

There are several dog stations on the Platzenberg where you can pick up poop bags and dispose of the filled bags.

Development plan no. 93 "Am Platzenberg"

Development plan no. 93 "Am Platzenberg" with integrated landscape plan has been legally valid since 1998. Similar objectives to those in the action plan have already been formulated here. However, for various reasons, they have hardly been implemented to date. This is now to be stepped up with the measures in the "Platzenberg nature experience" action plan.

The development plan also specifies which plots may be used as leisure gardens. The size and design of garden sheds and fences must comply with the specifications of the development plan.

The data provided here on the development plan is for information purposes only. No legal claims can be derived from the presentation.
