Dubrovnik

The port city has many inhabitants. It is situated on a rock on the coast of Croatia. The city has old walls and buildings. That is why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

After the war between Croatia and Serbia, Dubrovnik was partially destroyed in 1991. The city was then rebuilt. Now Dubrovnik is a tourist center. Dubrovnik has many cultural and sporting events. The summer festival takes place in July and August. Artists from home and abroad show their works. There are theaters, concerts and the celebration of St. Vlaho on February 3rd. There are sailing competitions, tennis and water polo. Tourism is important for the economy. Seafaring, wine and olive growing, trade and commerce are also important. Students can study in four faculties. These include management and technology in tourism.

Changeable history

Even the Romans lived on the rocky promontory. Dubrovnik itself has existed since the 7th century. The Byzantines ruled at first. In the middle of the 14th century, Dubrovnik became a free city republic. This remained the case until Napoleon occupied the city in 1806. The Congress of Vienna brought Dubrovnik to Austria-Hungary. After the First World War, Dubrovnik became part of the new kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. After the 2nd World War, it became Yugoslavia.

The patron saint's day

Dubrovnik celebrates the feast day of its patron saint. The patron saint is St. Blaise. The holiday is on February 3rd. The tradition has existed for more than a thousand years. The tradition is deeply rooted in the people of Dubrovnik and the surrounding area. The tradition has existed since 972 and UNESCO has included it on its list of intangible cultural heritage. Legend has it that St. Blaise saved the city. He saved the city from an attack by Venice. There are few cities that are as strongly associated with their patron saint as Dubrovnik. There are many events in honor of St. Blasius. There are cultural, musical and sporting events. The day of remembrance begins with a mass. This is followed by a procession. Relics of St. Blasius are carried in the procession. The procession goes through the old town of Dubrovnik. The old town is festively decorated.
