After the war between Croatia and Serbia, Dubrovnik was partially destroyed in 1991. The city was then rebuilt. Now Dubrovnik is a tourist center. Dubrovnik has many cultural and sporting events. The summer festival takes place in July and August. Artists from home and abroad show their works. There are theaters, concerts and the celebration of St. Vlaho on February 3rd. There are sailing competitions, tennis and water polo. Tourism is important for the economy. Seafaring, wine and olive growing, trade and commerce are also important. Students can study in four faculties. These include management and technology in tourism.
Changeable history
Even the Romans lived on the rocky promontory. Dubrovnik itself has existed since the 7th century. The Byzantines ruled at first. In the middle of the 14th century, Dubrovnik became a free city republic. This remained the case until Napoleon occupied the city in 1806. The Congress of Vienna brought Dubrovnik to Austria-Hungary. After the First World War, Dubrovnik became part of the new kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. After the 2nd World War, it became Yugoslavia.
