The tasks of the fire department

Rescue, extinguish, recover, protect: These are the basic tasks of the fire department. The oldest of these is firefighting, which of course still plays a major role in day-to-day work. In the meantime, however, the Bad Homburg fire department has developed into a modern emergency services organization.

Disaster response and preventive activities

The fire department carries out immediate life-saving measures, helps in the event of traffic accidents, floods, fires and other disasters. It also provides technical assistance and is active in raising awareness of how to deal with fire and prevent accidents.

Its other tasks include warning the public in the event of danger or crisis situations and providing instructions on self-protection. Prevention is also important: this is why the fire department inspects extinguishing equipment, draws attention to dangers, explains the correct behavior in emergency situations and provides assessments on major construction projects.

Protective suits for special tasks

Environmental protection is also becoming increasingly important, for example in the removal of oil spills and the containment of biological, chemical or nuclear hazards. In order to perform these tasks, the fire department has a wide range of special equipment and various protective suits that are suitable for carrying out these tasks. These include some that many may not immediately associate with firefighters. For example, special insect protection is required for the necessary removal of bees' nests or the silk moth caterpillar, which has become increasingly common in recent times. The water rescue suit is used for the search and rescue of objects and people in the water.
