Urban spaces and urban structure types

Nature and the landscape must be protected in accordance with the Nature Conservation Act. This applies to inhabited and uninhabited areas. In the past, inhabited areas were often not sufficiently included in landscape plans.

The University of Kassel has developed a new concept for landscape and open space in Bad Homburg.

Open spaces in cities consist of public areas. This also includes private gardens. Green spaces around commercial buildings are also included. These areas and buildings, streets and other things in the city form a mixed and very small spatial structure.

The city has made a map. The map shows the structure of the city. The inner area of Bad Homburg has 102 urban spaces. Each urban space has a description. Many urban spaces are similar. They are grouped into 26 urban structure types. Each type has a similar structure. Each type has a model.

Important criteria are the degree of sealing, the vegetation and the experience of nature in the city. Birds are indicators. Birds show nature in the city. Birds are important all year round.

Birds were mapped in 2015. The mapping was on representative areas. Each type of urban structure has typical bird species. There are three bird species for each type in the models. The habitats of the birds are important. They are important for future measures. Where there are many birds, the structure is good.

Urban spaces

The objectives for the urban structure types are different. The city designs public spaces. The city uses local materials. The city plants native plants. The city develops and designs paths. The city provides guidance on the use of private gardens. The city provides information on the design of private gardens. In the map you can see the profile for each of the 102 urban spaces. You can see the description and evaluation. You can see the model of the urban structure type. The urban space belongs to an urban structure type.

The mission statements have been written. The goals and measures have already been implemented.
