Promotion of climate protection projects

The following is a list of climate protection projects in Bad Homburg v.d.Höhe that have received state funding.

KSI: depot receives modern LED lighting

The depot has installed new LED lighting in its outdoor area on Nehringstraße and in two workshops on the site. The benefits of the measure are manifold. The new lighting reduces electricity consumption and also emits significantly less CO2. There is also a better working environment, as the workshops are now much better lit.

Work began in 2018 and was completed this year. EUR 17,700 was invested in the exterior lighting and EUR 16,800 in the workshops. The urgently needed refurbishment was funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) as part of the National Climate Initiative. The two projects were partially subsidized with over 25 percent of the investment costs. The funding is based on a decision by the German Bundestag. Since 2008, numerous projects have already been initiated and funded by the BMUB, supported by the project management organization Jülich, which contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to the significantly better illumination of the workshops, the simple facts of this measure are particularly impressive. In future, over 75,000 kWh of electricity will be saved per year. This corresponds to over 70 percent of the old lighting system and reduces CO2 emissions by almost 900 tons over its entire service life. Over the next few years, the Bad Homburg depot will also be equipping its other buildings with LEDs, thus making a further contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.

KSI: Replacing the mushroom lamp with an LED

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety has launched a funding program for local authorities and social and cultural institutions as part of a national climate protection initiative. The town of Bad Homburg v.d.Höhe applied to the project sponsor Jülich for this funding program and received funding of around 13,600 euros for the use of an energy-saving LED luminaire.

A first project under this program was the replacement of lights along Hessen- and Hindenburgring in 2009.

For the streets in the Chattenweg residential area, the city conducted a survey together with the Taunus-Zeitung newspaper. Seven different LED lights were installed for this purpose. The choice fell on the so-called "Spanish hat". A total of 56 mushroom lights have been replaced with the new model since January 2013 with the help of the funding. The order amounts to a total of 54,400 euros.

The new lights have a life expectancy of 20 years. Due to the lower power consumption, less carbon dioxide is produced during electricity generation. Extrapolated over the expected service life, around 320 tons less carbon dioxide will be produced.

In addition to the energy savings, the town of Bad Homburg v.d.Höhe also hopes that this project will set an example for other municipalities. The evaluation of the measure - in particular the actual energy savings and the avoidance of carbon dioxide - will be available to political bodies to help them decide on further refurbishment projects.

Replacement and conversion of various luminaires

Two applications for funding were submitted for the replacement and conversion of around 3,400 luminaires, including 620 old town luminaires. The aim of replacing the luminaires is to further reduce electricity consumption and to implement the EU regulation banning high-pressure mercury lamps.

The measure is expected to reduce electricity consumption by 66% on average.
CO2 savings: 3,983 tons

The measure aims to reduce electricity consumption by 71% on average.
CO2 savings: 3,475 tons

Implementation began in July 2013.

KSI: Refurbishment of the interior lighting in Bad Homburg v.d.Höhe

Under the title "Refurbishment of the interior lighting in Bad Homburg v.d.Höhe", the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety is funding the replacement of large parts of the interior lighting in the former Federal Securities Administration with a sum of up to 86,275.00 euros as part of the climate protection initiative. The listed administrative building from the 1950s is being renovated to improve its energy efficiency and converted into a technical town hall. In addition to the extensive interior insulation work and the connection to the district heating supply of the municipal utilities, the renovation of the interior lighting is a key component in the reduction of energy consumption. Over 400 lights will be replaced with LED technology. The aim is to save almost 70,000 kWh of electricity per year compared to the original situation, which is equivalent to the consumption of around 20 four-person households. The environmental impact is calculated to be reduced by almost 40 tons ofCO2.
