Organic waste

Organic waste from private households is collected weekly throughout the year. Collection dates can be found in the current waste calendar and in the Bad Homburg waste app.

Bad Homburg's kitchen and green waste is turned into valuable compost that can be used in a variety of ways. This is produced at the "Brandholz landfill" composting plant in Neu-Anspach. The finished compost is used in regional agriculture. It is also available free of charge to all interested parties in the Hochtaunus district for collection from the composting plant.

Separate correctly

The organic waste garbage can (brown garbage can) should contain e.g:

  • Fruit and vegetable waste
  • Raw and cooked food and food waste
  • Coffee and tea grounds, filter bags
  • Egg shells
  • Meat and sausage scraps
  • Nutshells
  • Wood shavings (unsoiled)
  • Kitchen paper
  • Green cuttings, weeds, potted plants, leaves
  • Windfall fruit

The following do not belong in the organic waste garbage can

  • Plastic bags (not even compostable ones!)
  • Plastic and metal packaging
  • Vacuum cleaner bags
  • Cigarette butts
  • Sweepings
  • Diapers
  • Pollutants and toxins
  • Cat litter, small animal litter
  • Soil and stones
  • Animal carcasses

Compostable plastic waste bags

The use of compostable plastic waste bags is not permitted in the organic waste garbage can.

So-called "compostable" plastic waste bags cannot be decomposed quickly enough in the Brandholz composting plant during the approximately three-week fermentation process and subsequent post-rotting.

The collection bags thus become contaminants and - as far as mechanically possible - are sorted out before treatment. The subsequent sorting of contaminants is usually incomplete, technically complex and also expensive.

It should also be borne in mind that compostable plastic bags never decompose completely. Plastic residues and, above all, microplastics therefore end up in nature via the finished compost.

Better:

  • Line pre-sorting bins with paper bags or alternatively with newspaper
  • Wrap wet organic waste in newspaper or kitchen paper

Paper bags for collecting your organic waste are available everywhere.

Exemption from the obligation to use an organic waste bin

The use of an organic waste garbage can is compulsory in Bad Homburg v. d. Höhe. In order to be exempted from this obligation, a written application for self-composting must be submitted.

Requirements for exemption:

  • Kitchen and garden waste produced can be properly and harmlessly recycled yourself.
  • Existence of a composting facility in use (compost heap, composter)
  • Existence of an area used for horticultural or agricultural purposes of at least 35 m² per registered person

An exception may be granted after examination of the required criteria.

Changes to the actual circumstances on which the application was based, in particular a change in the areas intended for compost application, must be reported to the Bad Homburg v. d.

Problems with the organic waste garbage can?

What do I do with the organic waste garbage can in hot weather?

Place the organic waste garbage can in the shade. Make sure that there is enough air between the organic waste: Simply throw small twigs and branches from your garden or crumpled up daily newspaper and kitchen paper or cardboard boxes between the organic waste. This will prevent the waste in the organic waste garbage can from starting to rot and becoming infested with vermin. Should vermin infestation nevertheless occur, calcium cyanamide (available from garden centers) will help. Never pour liquids such as soups or sauces into the organic waste garbage can!

What should I do with the organic waste garbage can in winter?

In winter, it also gets "frosty" for the organic waste garbage can. The organic waste can freeze and no longer fall out of the organic waste garbage can when it is emptied. You can remedy this by throwing crumpled newspaper into the bottom of the organic waste garbage can and wrapping the waste to be disposed of in newspaper. The paper absorbs the liquids and prevents the organic waste from freezing to the base or walls of the garbage can.

How do I clean the organic waste garbage can?

If necessary, please clean the organic waste garbage can with clear water. Cleaning agents are not necessary for this purpose and are unsuitable as they are often not completely broken down during composting. After cleaning, leave the garbage can with the lid open to dry out.

If you do not wish to clean the garbage can yourself, regional janitor services or specialized waste garbage can cleaning companies can also clean individual garbage cans. You will find possible contact points under the search term: "mülltonnen reinigungsservice rhein main" in your internet search engine. Please contact them by telephone and ask for individual bin cleaning.

Please understand that we are not allowed to name individual companies for reasons of competition law.
